NFL is the top level of professional American football in the World consisting of 32 teams. Like the MLB, the equivalent level for Baseball, it is split into two Conferences. In the NFL, each is divided into four geographic Divisions (North, East, South and West) with 4 teams in each. Each team plays the other teams in their division twice (home & away) during the regular season, in addition to 10 other games/teams assigned to their schedule by the NFL in the May before. They use a strength of schedule approach with teams of similar strength matched together, to even out the league.

The NFL regular season runs from September through to January, followed immediately by the NFL Championship Playoffs for the Super Bowl to decide the ultimate NFL champion of the season. See Key Dates
The Hall of Fame game precedes the season, played in early August between 2 teams selected by the league, with one team from each Conference.

The NFL has a roster limit of 53 players per team during the season; 45 of which dress for a game plus an "emergency quarterback" who only plays if all the quarterbacks on the 45-man roster are out of the game. NFL Development The game itself goes back as far as 1869. Although there have been professional American Football Leagues for over 80 years, the NFL in the form we know it today, is comparatively new, to its strength in the 1970's due to changes in rules opening up the game and the interest of Television. Before this time collegiate football was of possibly greater interest. Key people over the years in developing the NFL were Knute Rockne , both as player and coach , "Papa" George Halas, the galloping Ghost Red Grange , Curly Lambeau, Paul Brown, Bert Bell, Vince Lombardi, and Lamar Hunt. NFL Draft

In 7 rounds of draft, every NFL team gets to pick from a pool of eligible players, one pick per round. The highest draft picks are given to those teams who had the worst record in the previous year. Draft picks can also be traded for other players or other draft picks. This moving and shaking makes draft day a very exciting event.
