The Super Bowl is the climax of the American Football season. The champions of the NFC (National Football Conference) and the AFC (American Football Conference) meet in one the world's great sporting events to decide who will carry away the Vince Lombardi Trophy as annual champions of the NFL (National Football League). These two champions are determined in  a gruelling round of knock-out play-offs between the winners of the four divisions and two wild card teams in in each conference.

Competition Structure

The American Football Conference (AFC), and the National Football Conference (NFC) each have East, North, South and West Divisions, with four teams in each division who play out the Regular Season.

At the end of the regular season, the winners of each division plus the two teams with the next best record from each conference (Wild Card teams) go on to play in the next phase of the competition.

Wild Card Weekend is followed by the Divisional Playoffs and then the Conference Championships to decide the Super Bowl contenders.

Wild Card Weekend: the two Wild Card teams from each conference play the two weaker division winners from the same conference. The winners go on to the Divisional Playoffs.

Divisional Playoffs: the two winners from each conference from Wild Card Weekend play the top two division winners from the same conference. The games are played at the home fields of the top two teams. The winners go on to the Conference Championships.

Conference Championships: the winners of the Divisional Playoffs from each conference play each other to decide who challenges for the Super Bowl. The games are played at the home field of the teams with the top records at this time.
