Volleyball is team sport in which two teams of
six active players, separated by a high net, each try to score
points against one another by grounding a ball on the other
team's court. The goal in volleyball is to win three sets. The
first team to reach 25 points wins the set and the first team to
win three sets wins the match. Points are scored by grounding
the ball on the opponents' court, or when the opponent commits a
fault. Teams can contact the ball no more than three times
before the ball crosses the net, and consecutive contacts must
be made by different players. The ball is usually played with
the hands or arms, but players can legally strike or push (short
contact) the ball with any part of the body. The complete rules
of volleyball are more extensive. |
In 1891
history of volleyball began. Volleyball was invented by William Morgan
at the Holyoke YMCA in 1891 as a
game for sedentary businessmen. After graduating he moved to the YMCA at
Holyoke (Massachusetts) where he became Director of Physical Education. At
that time Morgan knew of no similar game to
volleyball which could
guide him. He developed it from his own sports training methods and his
practical experience in the YMCA gymnasium.
The Physical Education Directors of the YMCA adopted Volleyball in all its
societies throughout the United States. In 1900 Canada became the first
foreign country to adopt the game. Many other countries adopted volleyball
later: Elwood S. Brown in the Philippines (1910), J. Howard Crocker in
China, Franklin H. Brown in Japan (1908), Dr J.H. Gray in Burma, in China
and in India, and other precursors in Mexico, the South-American, European
and African countries.
