Cricket
 Played between two teams consisting of 11 players each. There is an earmarked circular ground area within which they have to play. This ground area varies from 65 yards to 75 yards from the centre of the pitch. The pitch is a strip prepared, rolled properly at the centre of the ground of which the game is played. This pitch is 66 feet long and 8 feet in width. There are three stumps on each longer side of the pitch (in the centre) with two bails (strip of wood) to cover the gaps on top of the stumps...".

ICC International Championships
The International Cricket Council sanctions a series of International Championships for the three types of game - 5 day Tests, One day, 50 over Internationals (ODI) and Twenty20.
At the Test level, there is a notional ranking scheme - the ICC Test Championship -superimposed on top of regular Tests played between the 9 nations [England, Australia, India, S Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh] competing, with the top ranking side holding the ICC Test Championship Mace. The other nations, take part in tests for the ICC Intercontinental Cup.
At the ODI level 16 nations take part in the ICC ODI Championship, (This is also a notional Ranking scheme overlaid on arranged International ODI matches) and the ICC Cricket World Cup, held every 4 years [2011, 2015,..] the lesser teams taking part in qualification matches - the ICC World Cup Qualifier. The ICC Champions Trophy is a shorter International ODI tournament held every 2 years. For national teams without Test status, there is also the ICC World Cricket league, operated as a league system, which features a promotion and relegation structure between divisions
At the Twenty20 International level the ICC sanction the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, held every 2 years and contested by all Test-playing nations plus qualifiers.

Indian Domestic Cricket
There are 5 major tournaments covering first class (5day) and ODI formats. The country is divided into 5 zones - North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone and Central Zone.
At first class level: The Ranji Trophy is the domestic cricket championship played in India between state and city sides, equivalent to county cricket in England. The Irani Trophytournament is played between the previous year's Ranji Trophy winners and the Rest of India Team. The Duleep Trophy originally played with five teams, drawn from the five zones, on a knock-out basis, but is now operates in a league format.
In the ODI format: The Challenger Series, an annual day-night one-day tournament, played in Oct. before the Ranjii season, to show-case the talent that the country has, as well as providing opportunities to younger players to make an impression.
