International Organisations

There are two organisations arranging tournaments at the highest level, the World Darts Federation and the Professional Darts Corporation. but the British Darts Organisation also organises a World Porfessional Championship.

PDC Professional Darts Corporation. Established 1992 after a split from the BDO. It runs a large number of top, televised tournaments of which the World Championship is the most presigious. The other tournamants are The Premier League, Las Vegas Desert Classic, UK Open, World Grand Prix, World Matchplay, the US Open, the Grand Slam of Darts and the Players Championship . WDF World Darts Federation was formed in 1976, by representatives of fifteen (15) nations. Membership is open to the official National organizing body for Darts in all nations. The WDF encourages the promotion of the Sport of Darts among and between those bodies, in an effort to gain international recognition for Darts as a major Sport. Tournaments are organised within individual countries, but the BDF run the following:  World Cup,  Asia/Pacific Cup, Americas Cup and the Europe Cup. More information from Wikipedia.

BDO British Darts Organisation, is the British amateur darts organisation, but organised the World Professional Darts Championship in 1978 and still runs the competition annually at Lakeside, UK, even after the split leading to the formation of the PDC. See Wikipediafor more detail.

BDO World Darts Championships Lakeside

Made very popular by Television coverage, this event at Lakeside, Frimley Green, Surrey, organised by the British Darts Organisation runs in the second week of January. There are Men's and Women's events.

PDC Grand Slam of Darts

The PDC Grand Slam of Darts is the first regular of its kind to be held in the United Kingdom where  the best performing players from its rival, the British Darts Organisation, participate. Initiated in 2007, it is held over 9 days during Novemberat the Wolverhampton Civic.

PDC US Open darts Tournament

The PDC US Open darts tournament, first introduced in 2007, is held currently at Atlanta, Georgia in May. The format of the tournament is the same as all of the Players Championship events on the PDC Pro Tour - from the first round to the final each game is best of 5 sets and best of 3 legs to a set.­Qualification: The tournament is open to both PDPA members and non-members resident in North America, giving the top US and Canadian-based stars the chance to take on the top PDC players

PDC World Matchplay

World Matchplay, introduced by the Professional Darts Corporation in 1994, is a very popular darts tournament, played in a legs format, a margin of two clear legs being required to win. The tournament is held in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool in mid July. Qualifiers are: Top 16 in Order of Merit and Top 16 in Players ­Championship Order of Merit not otherwise qualified.

Las Vegas Desert Classic

 The Las Vegas Desert Classic (PDC) held annually, at Madalay Bay Resort. The tournament is played live on Sky TV in the UK so it has to be played in the morning in the USA with recordings later in the day with Fox Sports.

PDC World Grand Prix

The World Grand Prix (a PDC tournament) is an annual event held in Dublin in October. The initial rounds are 3 set only and than move to best of 5 set.  See Wikipedia for full details.

UK Open

­UK Open darts, run by the PDC, nicknamed the "FA Cup of darts" allows the minnows to match up to the professionals, through qualifying heats throught the UK. There is no seeding and names are 'drawn out of a hat' to make the pairings at each round. In the final stages a tournament bracket is used. The finals are held at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton.

Premier League Darts

Premier League Darts was introduced by the Professional Darts Corporation in 2005 and is shown on Sky sports. Involving just the top 8 PDC professional darts players, in a doubleround-robin format, with matches held across the country at different venues, the league runs from February to May. Darts in Australia

Darts in Australia is controlled by the Darts Federation Australia. Each of the Australian States has a body that reports to DFA so that the sport is well organised and controlled, with uniform standards. There are abundant competitions for playersof State and Nationallevels and the Junior Development Programme is strong. It is estimated that there are in excess of 175,00 people that play darts on a weekly basis. In 2007, Australia had a number of World Ranked Players - Simon Whitlock (WR12), Tony David (WR14) and Ian Brown (WR26).

• Australian Legends The Legends over 45's for players over the age of 45 years, was formed in 1997 when the World Cup was held in Western Australia. Don Reynolds and Patrick Fletcher were the ones that set about to form the Legends by getting past players together from each state and they played after the Australian Championships in Perth. Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales were the states that kept the idea going.

• Broken Hill Darts Club Broken Hill is a very active Darts club near the border of NSW, VIC and SA. There is at least 1000 miles of almost nothing (about 3 times as large as the UK) around the towns. Darts is very big here, maybe 'cause there aint much else!
