Arsenal started out as "Dial Square", South of the River, at the Arsenal Armaments Factory, Woolwich in 1886, wearing all-red shirts provided by Nottingham Forest. Arsenalnews review
ANR as it's more commonly known is a web site offering match analysis and previews from writer Myles Palmer, the author of "The professor", which is of course based upon Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. The web site itself is pretty simple in design but don't let that put you off. ANR is well laid out and regularly updated often with the insightful writing of Myles Palmer usually off the top of his head which works really well. Sometimes predictions go astray thus making his best work the match analysis updates.

Aston Villa
Aston Villa started in 1874, as an extension of a Wesleyan Chapel cricket team, Villa Cross. It's first match was under mixed soccer & rugby rules. Becoming a professional team in 1880, it was one of the founder members of the Football league in 1988. It became very successful, winning the 1st Division Championships 6 times up to 1910. Alternating mostly between the 1st and 2nd Divisions since then, they have been in the top league now since 1988. Recent success: League Cup winners 1994, 1996; Ground: Villa Park Junction 6 of M6 to A38(M) Witton Train station on Birmingham toWalsall line
Bolton
Initially being formed as Christ Church Sunday School team, the team originally were known as "The Reds" because they wore red and white quartered shirts and later white shirts with red spots on, which were supposed to make them look bigger. They should have just used that silky effect material that was so popular in the 1980's, which certainly was snug fitting and made even the thinnest player look large Read on... from My Eyes have Seen the Glory
Blackburn
Birmingham
Formed when a group of cricketers got bored during the winter of 1875, a religious theme runs through their history with the original team being linked to Trinity church and subsequently moving from their first ground to St. Andrews in 1902. Initially, the side was named after the area of it's first home, Small Heath, they almost changed their title again when they moved to another nearby Heath; this time Edward's, but the blue link was not strong enough to persuade them. They did move, however, from their potholed Muntz Street ground (named after the character, Nelson, from The Simpsons), which became a great attraction for cavers for many years after, to St. Andrews. Charlton
Charlton was founded in 1905 and quickly advanced to the Football League in 1920. The 1930s saw Charlton climb to the First Division under the astute management of Jimmy Seed. In the 1945-46 season Charlton finished runners-up in the FA Cup, losing 4-1 to Derby County. But the next season Charlton lifted the cup, beating Burnley 1-0. Charlton were one of the country's leading clubs but the club failed to move with the times and complacency set in. The Valley was never properly modernised and the crowds began to dwindle. In 1956 legendary goalkeeper Sam Bartram retired at the age of 42 and the next season Charlton were relegated after some 14 years in the top flight. Manager Jimmy Seed was sacked and the club stayed in the Second Division until 1971 when the team were relegated to the Third Division. Charlton won promotion in 1975 and in November 1982 former European Footballer of the year Allan Simonsen was signed from Barcelona. It was an expensive gamble and it rebounded badly. He played just 17 games before moving to his homeland. 12 months later Charlton were just five minutes from going into receivership, but a rescue package was by the High Court and the club was saved from extinction. Charlton's future looked secure but in March 1984 the new chairman announced that he owned the club, but not the freehold to The Valley and in September 1985 he had decided to move the club to Crystal Palace's Selhurst Park. In 1986 Charlton won promotion back to the top flight and stayed there until 1990. In December 1992 after seven years of exile, Charlton returned to The Valley. New managers Alan Curbishley and Steve Gritt were appointed. But in 1995 Alan Curbishley was put in sole charge and just two years later Charlton finished fourth in Division One. Charlton reached the final of the play-offs and would face Sunderland at Wembley. Sunderland were favourites but a hat-trick from Clive Mendonca helped Charlton to a 4-4 draw, and after 13 penalties Charlton goalkeeper Sasa Ilic saved Michael Gray's penalty and Charlton were in the Premier League. The Club started brightly but on the final day of the season the team were relegated. Charlton bounced back in style, winning the First Division Championship. Charlton were favourites to be relegated but a top half finish saw Charlton keep their top-flight status THE GROUND.. The Valley has undergone many improvements in the last few years. The Oldest Stand is the Jimmy Seed Stand on the South side of the ground, the stand was named in memory of the FA Cup winning manager who managed the club from the 1930's to 1950's and has a capacity of 3,000. The stand is the away end of the ground. The East Stand was built in 1994 and holds 6,000. The West stand was built for Charlton's first but unsucessful Premiership campaign, the stand is a double tier stand with conferencing suites, bars and offices and holds 8,000 fans. The newly built 9,000 seater North Stand was built on top of the old Covered End at The Valley. The stand is a double tier, with single tier North-West and North-East corners that connect to the East and West Stands. Charlton returned to the Valley in 1992, with a capacity of just over 8,000. GROUND LOCATION.. By Road From the M25 exit M25 at junction 2 and follow until the road becomes A102(M). Continue along to the A102(M), until you reach the exit sign posted Woolwich Ferry. Turn right onto the A206 Woolwich Road. At the first set of traffic lights turn right and Floyd Road is the 2nd turning on the left. By Train Charlton Train Station is a minute walk from the Valley. Exit the station to Charlton Church Lane, and across the road you will see a row of shops to your right, turn down the road to the left of them, and the Away Stand is down the turning on the right. Chelsea
Chelsea entered the 2nd Division of the Football League in 1905, in their first year as a club, but had to wait for success. Their history can be simplified as a yo-yo between the top two Divisions. They have been in the Premier Division since it was formed in 1992 and have a reputation for good cup runs. Challenging now for the top spot with their new manager See also: My eyes have seen the glory

Crystal Palace history goes back to 1871, when staff from the Crystal Palace formed a football team which became one of the 15 founder entrants to the FA Cup competition. Everton evolved from a church team -St Domingo's- set up in 1878., taking the current name a year later. The royal blue strip was worn for the first time in 1901. As founder members of the Football League, 1888, they were a very successful side in both league and cup. "The Toffees" were less successful in the post-war years, but recovered in the 60's and have now become a regular member of the top division, without winning major honours. Liverpool FC
Liverpool FC - ....it all started a long time ago, when a group of kids played football on a piece of green just outside the City at Calme Downe. They went to to get a team together, but an argument over a new ground, saw the side split into Everton and Liverpool. The owner of the ground could not secure the name of that part of Liverpool (Everton) and so they played under the name of the City. They should have played under the name of Liverpool Scottish, because in their first game, the only player who wasn't from North of the border was the goalkeeper. And that was only because Scottish goalkeepers had a reputation even back then !! An early FA Cup saga developed..... read on: my eyes have seen the glory

After formation in 1887 and changing their name from Ardwick FC in 1894, City won Second Division championships in 1899 and 1903, with an FA Cup win in 1904. Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough - In their early years, Middlesbrough won two Amateur Cups, one of which in 1898 was achieved despite having to play the semi-final miles away from their home ground, because of a smallpox outbreak in Cleveland at the time. Funnily enough, illness hit the club again in 1997, when the club could not put a side out to play Blackburn Rovers and lost three points. Three points that lost them their place in the Premier League. Maybe it was travelling that did it, as once they went four and a half years without an away win (33 games). Read on ... Newcastle United - The origins of Newcastle United stem from two rival clubs situated at each end of the city - Newcastle East End and Newcastle West end. They were relegated in 1995 and took 9 years to return. More details from Wikepedia

It all started in 1898 in the offices of a solicitor, in High Street, Portsmouth. Sunderland AFC
Sunderland AFC started out life as Sunderland and District Teachers' Association Football Club in 1879, at the Blue House Field at Hendon and reduced the Teachers contribution to the title when a wider player participation was invited. The home venue changed until they acquired a 15,000 capacity ground at Newcastle road as early as 1882. A rival club, the Sunderland Albion nearly broke away, but they joined the league in 1890, replacing Stoke and remained there for 68 years!. Read on with the Official record.

Wigan Athletic A succession of teams represented Wigan from 1897, changing from 'County' to 'United' to 'Town ' to 'Borough', struggling to survive economically. Eventually Wigan Athletic had more success, but after forming in 1932 it took to 46 years to join the league in 1978 into Division 4. Their first league promotion was in 1981 and apart from one relegation they have crept up the leagues to join the Premiership in 2005.

Doing the 92
Is somewhere for groundhoppers to keep tabs on the number of league grounds they've visite, run by a bunch of footie fans The nice thing about the site is that it shows how close you've got to the 92 over time. Not something people worried about 20 years ago, but with all the ground moves and automatic promotion/relegation from the Conference it's become a constantly moving target.
