The next significant step towards professional racing was 6 centuries later with race courses becoming established throughout the country and the setting up of the great classic races - the St Leger (1776), the Oaks (1779), the Derby (1780) the 2,000 Guineas (1809) and the 1,000 Guineas (1814).
