The track is known for its oval shape with a unique bend in the backstretch. Racing on the oval began on March 22, 1964 with a 100-mile champ car event won by A.J. Foyt. It would be another 24 years before the famed NASCAR would roll into Phoenix Raceway. The first NASCAR Winston Cup Series race held at PIR was in November 6th, 1988. That day Alan Kulwicki won the Checker Auto Parts 500 and the tradition of Phoenix racing began. Las Vegas Motor SpeedwayLas Vegas Motor Speedway History - Construction on Vegas Speedway began in 1995 with the difficult task of removing millions of tons of dirt. By September 15, 1996 the dirt and a lot more had moved, and the flag dropped on Indy Las Vegas 500 to test the completed speedway. Richie Hearn was the first racer to ever hit the winners circle in Vegas that day. In November of that same year NASCAR speed into Las Vegas with it's Craftsman Truck series. In '97 the Busch Series followed and in '98 NASCAR put it's final stamp of approval on the SuperSpeedway track with the Inaugural Las Vegas 400 race. At the end Mark Martin won to take his place as a record setter in Vegas as well. Since then the "Diamond in the Desert" has continued to grow. It not only houses racetracks of many sizes in dirt and asphalt, but also many racing schools and more. Carl Moore, Larry Carrier and R.G. Pope based the track design on the Charlotte Motor Speedway, just smaller. The track should have been built in Piney Flats, five miles from Bristol, but the three men ran into opposition from residents there. The first NASCAR practice race at the then Bristol International Speedway was held on July 30, 1961 and won by Fred Lorenzen. The official race, the Volunteer 500, was won by Jack Smith and Johnny Allen on that same day, because Smith brought Allen in as a relief after the 290th lap. Since then the venue has continuously grown and changed in track, seating and name. Today it is called the "World's Fastest Half Mile".
