Netball
There are seven players on each team and the aim of the game is to get the ball in the opposing goal hoop as many times as possible throughout a 60 minute match. The netball court is 100 ft long by 50 ft wide, approximately the size of a tennis court. The court is split by two lines that divide the court into thirds. At both ends of the court there is a shooting semicircle and a ten ft goal post with no back board. Each team member has a specific position that is restricted to an area on the court. These restricted areas have an attacking and defending player in them, each from an opposing team.

Netball Player Positions Explained
There are seven players on each team, who are given nominated, named positions (some junior/training variants have only five players per team, and the indoor short version has 6 players). Each player must wear a "bib" showing one of the abbreviations below, indicating that player's position. Each player is only allowed in certain areas of the court: a player in a section of court that is not part of their playing area is deemed "offside". Wikipedia.

The History of Netball
Netball History developed in the 1890's from its origins with Basketball. Early versions of the game had to be modified to accommodate restrictions due to the dress code for women at that time, reducing some of the actions. Other variations were introduced simply because of a misunderstanding of Naismith's original instructions. Rules in 1901 led to the first competitive games. See Wikipedia for more detail.

covers the development of Netball; the history of netball broken down into periods - 1895 to 1920, 1921 to 1959, 1960's and the 70's and 80's
The Origin of Netball
"In 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts a 30-year-old Canadian immigrant
to the USA, James Naismith, was ordered to invent an indoor game for
high-spirited young men at the School for Christian Workers (later the
YMCA). Basketball was born...with the original game featuring nine
players - three forwards, three centres and three guards - simply
because Naismith had 18 youths to keep amused. Women's indoor
basketball began exactly two days later when female teachers to the gym
were captivated by the game but it wasn't until 1895 that the current
game of netball was well and truly shaped." (From the IFNA)

Netball Injuries and Treatment
Adult netball players most often sustain injuries to the ankles, knees and hands. Child injury is most often to the hands and/or particularly to the fingers, followed by the ankle. Knee injuries are generally the most severe and costly injuries associated with netball. Overall, netball injuries are mostly sprains and strains with the exception of finger injuries that tend to be fractures or dislocations. Falls, incorrect landing, over-exertion, overuse, collisions
with other players and being struck by the ball are common causes of injury. From Monash.edu.au.
Ankle Strapping Consider the game of netball - the short sprints, the hard stops, the twists & turns required to play the game. The forces that are pushed down and through the joints in the lower body can be very severe. Knees, ligaments and ankles are the all too frequently injured whilst playing. The wearing of a form of support for the ankles & knees is becoming more common amongst netball players as a means of injury prevention. England Netball is now suggesting that players routinely strap their ankles before a game. Here are two ways adopted to tape an ankle for sport. The strapping for both these methods is a wide adhesive tape. A stretchable bandage has no effect. The first is the old fashioned 'figure of eight' strapping around the ankle & the sole of the foot. This is easily self applied. The second is a little more radical and may require assistance. This method has been referred to as the stirrup method; there are no doubt other names. Adhesive tape is passed under the heel and anchored to the calf by a banding of tape around the calf. Further tape is then applied over this 'foundation' around the ankle. The alternative is to purchase a medical/sports pre formed ankle support. From Craig our UK Netball Librarian
