Man
and the Horse has been developing a partnership for thousands of years.
English Kings from the
12th century onwards imported horses from Italy, Spain and North
Africa, and Henry VIII maintained his own racing stable. Henry's Hobbys,
as they were called, raced against horses owned by other nobility, leading
the word "hobby" to mean a "costly pastime indulged in by
the idle rich." .
Dressage competition
evolved from 16th Century Italian and French horsemanship academies and
the Cavalry endurance rides were the starting point for 3 day
events.
The earliest known
Jumping Competition was in Ireland at the Dublin Horse Show of 1864.
The Societe Hippique Francaise was founded a year later. England
held its first event at the Agricultural Hall in London in 1869
International
control of the sport was introduced in 1921 with the formation of the FEI
(Federation Equestre
Internationale) and this is still operating. Most countries control have their own Equestrian
Federations.
The top Federation sites in English are the American,
Australian,
Canadian,
British,
Irish and
New
Zealand sites. The Belgian
French
,
German
and Italian sites are in their own language.
