Aristocratic settlers from England first brought race horses to the USA with the first racetrack being laid out on Long Island as early as 1665. Examples of the new English breed, the Thoroughbred. (Bulle Rock,1730) were introduced in the 17th and 18th centuries. and then Americans set about creating their own versions.  The American Stud Book started in 1868. The Jockey club, formed in 1894 played a major role in eliminating corruption. The status of the sport has changed with the attitude to gambling. All betting at American tracks today is done under the pari-mutuel wagering system,  developed  in the late 19th century. State and multi-State lotteries and Tax arrangements may become other major factors in the future development of the sport in the USA.                           History

Horses were typically heavy animals who could handle rough ground, stay, and jump..". Read on from ................
