Traditional Styles Traditional wrestling forms have been a part of human culture since the beginning of civilization.  They have served societies around the world in various ways throughout history and have been an integral part of man’s ascent into the present. These styles all have distinct rules and objectives and may have regional variations and ceremonial rituals incorporated into the events.  Some of these styles have become legitimate internationally practiced amateur sports and some have remained as traditional social customs.

Just what is backhold wrestling? Well, first of all, it was the sport at which the great Donald Dinnie started his incredible career to become the world's first international sports super star. Dinnie won his first money prize, the princely sum of one Pound Sterling in 1853 at the age of 16, when he beat David Forbes the Heavyweight wrestling champion of Deeside by five falls ...... from the article, below.

Cornish Cornish Wrestling, or ‘wrasslin’ as the local call it, is an ancient form of one-on-one combat, similar in style to many other forms of Celtic wrestling. Similar to Judo, and unlike most other Celtic styles, a jacket is used which enables opponents to gain a hold of each other. There is no wrestling on the ground at all.  See Cornish Wrestling by Wikipedia

nock your opponent out of the 15-foot diameter ring or make your opponent touch the ground with any part of the body other than the soles of the feet. Punching, gouging, and kicking are prohibited, but slapping and tripping are allowed. Techniques, "kimarite" are very important in sumo, since technical expertise allows "rikishi" - to defeat opponents who are larger, stronger, or faster. There are about 70 kimarite, but almost all victories are achieved by the most popular dozen.  Read more from the California Sumo Association

This form of wrestling was popular back in the late 19th century; Frank Gotch, Farmer Burns, many of these grapplers took their skills to Japan.  But recently the growth of mixed martial arts (UFC, Pride) has sparked an interest in no gi submission grappling events that are more akin to brazilian jiu jitsu (bjj) in scoring and structure, just without the gi. The ISWA has taken submission wrestling to the next level by implementing more scoring in the neutral position by adding rules from int'l, and folkstyle wrestling (5 pt throw, 3 pt throw, 2 pt takedown). This will make the matches much more exciting and force the athletes to become complete grapplers.  Wrestlers will have to learn to finish and defend submissions, while jiu-j itsu athletes will have to learn to execute and defend takedowns and throws.  The ISWA has made a distinction between no gi sub grappling which is more akin to bjj, and no gi  sub wrestling which is a mix of wrestling/judo/bjj/sombo.
If you have any questions about no-gi submission Wrestling then ask  James of ISWA
