Washers GameWashers Toss, Washer Pitching, Poor-man's horse-shoes, "Texas Horseshoes", washoos and many other names. Similar in concept to Horseshoe pitching, scoring the same way (individuals or teams compete against one another in an effort to be the first to reach a winning score of 11, 17 or 21 points), but using 2.5" in diameter washers with a 1" center hole and throwing them to land in a circular target. The target can be a recessed cup as a target, typically made of PVC pipe 3" or 4" in diameter and 4.5" deep or a hole in a flat, solid or even rubbery sheet raised off the ground, depending on the type of game being played. See rules and vocabulary from the Washers Pitching Association.

Washers Game Jargon
The History of Washers GameThe Origin of Washers GameThere are many rumours. There are theories that the game dated back to the times of the pioneers by cowboys who would take the wheels off their covered wagons and pitch washers (or whatever was handy) into the hub of the wheel for entertainment. A more popular theory is that the game was created by persons living in rural areas with few recreational resources - maybe just a challenge by mechanics on how many washers they could throw into an oil can - on their coffee breaks of course!

Washers Game TrainingAlthough there are many techniques for throwing a washer, the most common way is to throw with an underhanded motion, with the washer resting on the middle finger and with the index finger curled around the edge of the washer and the thumb resting on top. The washer should roll or spin off the index finger (similar to a Frisbee). It should maintain a pitch that should be parallel to the ground. Washers that flip end-over-end will usually roll away from the hole. Stance can be just as important as the throwing of the washers. You should always throw from the same spot each time for consistent throws. Some players will take one step forward when throwing the washers, while others will stand in the same place to throw theirs. From Washer Pitching Basics.
