Clean, green and absolutely full of fishing options, that’s New Zealand.  Everyone is aware of the world class Trout fishing available through the length and breadth of this far away land, but did you know that there are just so many more options for any fishing-mad visitor. A little trip down the Country and back again will show a feeling for the variety, and highlight some of the great spots and common methods.  Darryl French.  Fly Fishing

Our trip starts in Rotorua in the North Island, with a focus on Trout, and with the many lakes and rivers in this area the choice is yours. From early morning starts with a luminous glow fly after the big Tarawera trout, to nymphing on the Ngongotaha after spawning browns and rainbows, many of these are well past the magic 10lb mark, with the largest I heard of this year being 16lb. Close to Rotorua itself you can try spotting cruising browns in nearby rivers like the Rangitaiki, and there are many kilometres of easily accessible fishing there. If its solitude you are after then this is the place to go surrounded by native bush with many and varied winding walking tracks down to, and alongside the river. From Rotorua we move South to the fishing Mecca of Taupo. Here you can troll or harl on the great lake itself, and many charter operators specialise in fishing trips which would have you catching fighting fit rainbows in short trips on 3-4 hours. For river fishing you must try the “ picket fence “ at the Waitahanui mouth where large numbers of anglers normally indicate fresh runs of trout entering the river. Further South you can’t go past the mighty Tongariro; here you can take your pick and wet line or nymph the many famous pools like the Major Jones and the Judges, with catches of 3 or more fish, 3 being the daily limit, very common. Moving down to the South Island, and still on the trout, you need to try the Southland rivers of the Mataura or Oreti, or take to the back Country rivers like the gin clear Eglington, in one of the many charter Helicopter trips. The evening rise on the Mataura is world famous as 3-4lb browns rise readily to tiny size 18-20 midge flies. While you are in the South Island, Salmon fishing is also a must. This can be as easy as taking a whole day trip on the Rakia in a jet boat, flitting from pool to pool, or join the crowds at the Waimakariri’s “ Macintosh’s hole” or at the mouth itself at Kairaki. Salmon on spinning tackle in the confined space of a river are a real challenge, as well as a great evening meal.  Coming back up the Country with a focus on sea fishing your first stop is in the Kaikoura area where you can take in some excellent bottom fishing for Blue cod, before rounding out your day with some “ Whale watching “ just off the coast. Back in the North Island a good first stop is at Whakatane, where the active volcano of White Island is just a brief boat trip offshore. Here Kingfish are the target, and with freshly caught Flying fish as bait, fish of 40 – 50lb are not uncommon. Depending on the time of year the annual Tuna tournament in January is a real must, as to see the huge schools of anchovies being rounded up and then slashed to pieces by these yellow bullets is truly amazing. Trolling is almost useless, unless in Lake Nasser; Still fishing is very nice and rewarding in the south (Luxor and Aswan); 3m-5m rod is the right size, telescopic is just fine; Use a spinning reel with 0.3mm-0.4mm monofilament with 50m or more available and size 4 to size 8 hooks. Use a bobber and 20-40g weights. For  night fishing, use small glow sticks on top of the bobber.. For bait use earth worms (best) or soft bread pulp. (Flies and plastics are not much welcomed by Egyptian fish!) You'll be expecting tilapia, tigerfish, catfish or a few more species.
