Jetskis are personal watercrafts (PWC) developed commercially
since the early 1970's, typically using an indoor motor to
rotate a jet pump which in turn, rapidly and powerfully, force
water behind the vessel, creating the power to drive forward,
rather than driven by a conventional screw-shaped propeller. The
operator adopts a sitting, standing, or kneeling position. They
are mostly used for personal pleasure, often with
multi-seating plus skiers towing capability and are, also, very popular for
racing purposes.

The personal watercraft (PWC) concept originated in the 1960s when a
home inventor conceived and built his notion of a powered water ski.
Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), introduced a
watercraft in the late 1960s with limited success. This watercraft gets credit for being the first sit-down style PWC. In the early 1970s
Kawasaki Motors introduced the the first commercially successful PWC. In the mid-1980s
Yamaha Motor Corp joined in the manufacturing of PWCs. Shortly after,
BRP re-joined the market with their Sea-Doo
model.
PWC consumer magazines like;
Personal
Watercraft Illustrated and
Watercraft
World also began hitting the racks in the mid-1980s.
Sales of PWC
peaked in 1995
with approximately
200,000 units sold. Today's
personal watercraft are affordable family boats with clean, quiet,
fuel-efficient engines and no
exposed
propellers.
New off-throttle steering technology offers personal watercraft users
increased manoeuvrability when the throttle is disengaged. Manufacturers
have been outstanding in responding to customer's desire for
environmentally- friendly recreation, and
have created cleaner, quieter and safer personal watercraft.

Jetski was kind of a "nickname" that Kawasaki
gave to their personal watercrafts in the early beginning and it became
a household name for it a long while. Later, Yamaha became famous with the
Waverunner and lately Seadoo, too, have become a household name for personal
watercrafts. Now, the general population refer to them using four different
names. The name used by the regulating authorities is personal watercrafts.
