Windsurfing (also called boardsailing) is a hybrid between sailing and surfing, using a single sail, connected to the board via a flexible joint. Steering is accomplished by the rider tilting the mast and sail or by manipulating the board.  See Wikepedia background information

History The first recorded introduction to "sailboarding" involving the universal joint, was by Newman Darby in 1963, but Aeronautical Engineer Bill Drake is often credited with this. He feels his contribution  was "to make the thing actually efficient and workable". Manufacture of the equipment started in the 1970's and the popularity of the sport took off in the 1880's.  More detail from Wikipedia and from Peter Volwater

International Windsurfing Association (IWN) founded in Jan 2001, responsible for the management and development of competitive windsurfing – in all disciplines. The Classes (and their members) remain in control of their own destinies through their constitutions, class rules, AGM's and committees.
